Why filter sand needs changing

Sand filters work because the sharp edges of each grain trap fine particles. Over years the grains wear smooth, and in Jeddah fine dust, calcium and oils bind them into clumps. Water then finds channels through the sand instead of being filtered.

The result is water that never looks quite clear, even with good chemistry, and a pump that works harder against a clogged filter. Fresh media restores proper filtration.

Sand or glass

Sand or glass media: which is better for you?

Filter sand is the traditional, lower-cost option and works well when changed on time. Recycled glass media is more expensive but filters finer particles, resists clumping and bacteria, and usually lasts longer.

For pools in dusty or construction-heavy areas, or where water clarity has been a recurring problem, glass is often worth it. We will explain both options and prices before we start.

Keep your new filter working longer

A few habits make a big difference to how long your filter media lasts:

  1. 1Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.
  2. 2Backwash when the pressure rises about 8 to 10 psi above the clean reading.
  3. 3Avoid backwashing too often, which can actually reduce filtration.
  4. 4Use a filter cleaner every few months to dissolve oils and calcium.
  5. 5Keep pH balanced so calcium does not cement the sand together.

How we change pool filter sand

Our eight-step process for a clean, leak-free filter.

  1. 1

    Gather materials

    Measure the filter and bring the correct amount and grade of new media.

  2. 2

    Drain the filter

    Turn off the pump and drain the filter tank completely.

  3. 3

    Remove the valve

    Carefully lift off the multiport valve to access the sand.

  4. 4

    Remove old sand

    Scoop or vacuum out all the old sand from the tank.

  5. 5

    Inspect the laterals

    Clean and check the laterals and standpipe for cracks or damage.

  6. 6

    Refill with new media

    Half-fill with water to protect the laterals, then pour in the new sand.

  7. 7

    Reassemble & backwash

    Refit the valve with a new O-ring, backwash, then rinse.

  8. 8

    Switch to filter mode

    Return the valve to 'Filter', restart the pump and check pressure.

How often should pool filter sand be changed?

Every three to five years for most residential pools in Jeddah, sooner if the pool has had heavy dust, algae or calcium problems. Glass media can last longer.

How long does a sand change take?

Usually two to four hours for a typical villa filter, including backwashing and testing.

Do I need to drain the pool?

No. Only the filter tank is drained. The pool stays full.

What happens if a lateral is broken?

Broken laterals let sand into the pool. We inspect them during every change and replace damaged ones on the spot.

Is glass media worth the extra cost?

For many Jeddah pools, yes: it filters finer dust, resists clumping and usually lasts longer. We will advise based on your pool.
