How a salt water pool works

A salt water pool is still a chlorine pool. A low concentration of salt, far less salty than the sea, is dissolved in the water, and an electrolytic cell turns it into chlorine as the water passes through. The chlorine sanitises the pool, then reverts to salt, and the cycle repeats.

Because chlorine is produced continuously, levels stay steadier than with manual dosing. Many swimmers find the water gentler on eyes and skin.

Is salt right for your pool?

Salt systems are excellent for most Jeddah villa pools, but it is worth knowing what they need:

  1. 1pH tends to rise, so it still needs checking and adjusting.
  2. 2The cell scales up with calcium and must be cleaned regularly.
  3. 3Some natural stone and older metal fittings can be sensitive to salt.
  4. 4The cell is a consumable and will need replacing after several years.
  5. 5In summer, output and pump run time usually need to increase.

The most common reason a salt pool turns green is a scaled or worn cell producing much less chlorine than the display suggests. We inspect the cell, measure salt and chlorine independently and clean the cell in a mild acid solution when needed.

No. A salt system makes chlorine from salt. The difference is that it is produced steadily inside the system instead of being added by hand.

Will the water taste salty?
